The Barbara Gordon Leukemia Bone Marrow Awareness, Inc. is a Florida Non-Profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our Mission is to secure committed bone marrow donors by creating awareness among South Florida communities and providing opportunities for the collection of bone marrow cheek swabs from potential donors. The organization has partnered with Be The Match to identify committed bone marrow donors. Our Vision is to become a global contributor to saving the lives of people diagnosed with Leukemia Bone Marrow Disease.
The organization is the brainchild of Barbara Gordon, a survivor of Myelocytic Leukemia for more than 20 years. Noting that many patients experience depression when they first learn that they have the illness, Barbara said the organization is geared toward alleviating fears and encouraging hope for those who learn that they have the disease. She also said patients suffer other challenges. “There are many, including children, who don’t have medical insurance and can’t pay for Bone Marrow transplants.” One of the foundation’s aims is therefore to help patients fund these medical procedures.
Additionally, the organization wants to raise the awareness of potential bone marrow donors, letting them know that by donating either bone marrow or blood cells they are committing themselves to the lives of others.
To raise money, the organization plans an annual Walk/Race for Awareness as its major fundraising event.
On Saturday mornings when the weather is fine, our Walking Club meets at 7:30 a.m. at Shelter 2 in Larry and Penny Thompson Park. Join us for an invigorating walk along the scenic cross-country paths in the park. Call 305-517-3981 on Fridays to verify the walk is on.
